South Africa’s most iconic figure Nelson Mandela celebrates his 94th Birthday today at home with his family. Whilst 12 million children across the country sung a special birthday song composed for the former President as part of official celebrations taking place today in South Africa.
The anti-apartheid activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela also known to South Africans as Madiba, his Xhosa clan name or Tata (Father), has received in excess of 250 awards over four decades.
In case you wondered why, in Mandela’s words:
“The struggle is my life,” are not to be taken lightly.
“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die”.
